This Play Therapy training - Certificate: practical therapeutic skills in Play Therapy (play therapy) is accredited by Play Therapy Play Therapy International (PTI), Academy of Play and Child Psychotherapy.
It is the only worldwide Play Therapy training whose effectiveness is proven by clinical research involving more than 19,000 cases. Currently, more than 1,000 students in 21 countries are taking this training. Successful completion of this Play Therapy training and submission of a portfolio provides the international title of 'Certified Practitioner in Therapeutic Play Skills'- bestowed by the PTUK Register of Play and Creative Arts Therapists. The professional title is endorsed by the Professional Standards Authority- an independent UK organisation dedicated to creating and protecting standards in the human health professions in the UK.
TRAINING RECEPTIONISTS
Professionals who have at least two years of professional experience working with children and have at least a bachelor's degree or higher. The training is intended for:
psychologists, clinical psychologists, psychiatrists, child psychiatrists, paediatricians, psychotherapists, social workers, teachers, pre-school teachers, special educators, speech and language therapists, occupational therapists.
TRAINING OBJECTIVES
To enable participants to safely and effectively use therapeutic play skills in a variety of situations to provide emotional support to children aged 3 and over with mild to moderate problems. On successful completion of the course each participant will:
CERTIFICATION TRAINING STRUCTURE
Module 1 - Introduction to Play Therapy within the Integrative Holistic Play Therapy Model
From this module you will learn how to: 1. use the non-directive skills of Play Therapy through sandbox play
2. begin safe therapeutic work with children while ensuring confidentiality of the process
3. keep records of your child's therapy
4. ensure your child's safety during sessions, place and maintain boundaries appropriately
5. create a safe Play Therapy room and therapy service
6. successfully establish and evaluate a therapeutic relationship with your child
7. skillfully communicate with children using music and movement therapy
8. use movement therapy using Laban's method of analysis to understand the body, dynamics, space and relationships that develop and to communicate with the child during sessions
9. deliver safe and effective therapy to children within the legal and ethical standards of child protection
10. understand the standards of training and practice within the PTI/PTUK regulations
11. evaluate the impact of current research, including own practice data on the treatment of children's emotional, behavioural and psychological difficulties
12. analyse, present, apply and evaluate the principles of the therapeutic play continuum in the context of a spectrum of children's needs
Module 2 - Safe use of symbolic tools and metaphor in Play Therapy
During this module you will learn how to:
1. integrate the use of art (drawing, painting, collage, etc.), puppets, therapeutic stories and clay into your practice
2. demonstrate extensive knowledge, application and practice of relevant aspects of child development theory
3. evaluate therapeutic interventions with children who have attachment/trauma issues, e.g. in foster care situations
4. apply child protection procedures in practice
5. evaluate and successfully use Play Therapy with children who have problems with behaviour, anxiety, distress, mood, sleep, grief and bereavement
6. write a therapeutic story is based on Milton Erickson' s theory and incorporating principles of CBT and NLP to achieve a specific therapeutic goal
7. understand imagery work created by children in drawing, painting, clay and sandpits
8. create pacemakers and use them in differentiated ways for example to control anger.
Module 3 - Using Expressive Arts Therapy as a means of processing and reaching the unconscious
During this module you will learn how to: 1. present and apply relevant neuroscience principles when working with children and their parents/carers
2. integrate and evaluate sand play and creative visualisation (guided imagery) as therapeutic Play Therapy play interventions
3. assess and work with children who have learning and communication difficulties, attention problems and over-activity (including ADHD)
4. analyse, apply and discuss the necessity and impact of safe process termination in therapeutic work
5. understand and apply the skills of SandPlay Therapy as an 'x-ray of the soul'
6. use a creative visualisation technique to help you and your clients focus, anchor, nurture and appreciate themselves. Relaxation exercises are often an important introduction to other interventions
7. use basic statistical methods to enable you to present and analyse case studies, clinical management and understanding of research data collected.
Learning methods
By working with other trainees, students will be able to learn and experience the roles and responsibilities in the therapeutic relationship. Theoretical lectures will be kept to a minimum. Some of the lectures are delivered online. Learning will be experiential and collaborative using pairs, group work, role play and case presentations. 100 hours of clinical work with children under supervision is required as the main method of learning.
DURATION
- 15 days delivered as an intensive 15-day course or 5 three-day modules
- 9 months from start of training - to submit academic papers
- 18 months from start of training - to complete clinical work and 100 hours of supervised practice.
On successful completion of the programme, a title is awarded: the Post Graduate Certificate of Therapeutic Play Skills.Post Graduate Certificate of Therapeutic Play Skills.
This is followed by the next level, the Diploma, which leads to a qualification as a Play Therapy therapist.
CONDITIONS FOR GRANTING THE CERTIFICATE
The Post Graduate Certificate in Therapeutic Play Skills in Play Therapy will be awarded on completion of the following work within 20 months of the training:
- a case study, involving working with a child for at least 12 sessions and demonstrating a clear integration of theory and practice; (approximately 4,000 words).
- an essay: combining the experience of doing Sand Tray with the principles of Virginia Axline's non-directive therapy (approx.1000 words).
- Writing a therapeutic story for a selected client with specific difficulties (approx.1000 words). Reflection on the story read to the child and analysis of the story (approx.1000 words). A total of 2,000 words.
- Essay: comparison of two theories of child development (approx.2000 words). -Essay: movement analysis according to Laban Movement Analysis theory taught (approx.1000 words).
- Creation and delivery of a PowerPoint presentation (PPT) on Play Therapy skills. Reflection and analysis of the presentation made (approx. 1000 words).
- Writing a creative visualisation for a selected client (approx.1000 words). Reflection and analysis of a creative visualisation read to a child (approx. 1000 words). A total of 2,000 words.
- Keeping a Process Diary, which covers the training period, daily sessions with clients and sessions with the supervisor. Completion of the Process Diary follows 100 hours of clinical work.
- 100 hours of individual work with children using play therapy.
- Regular supervision (1 hour of supervision per 6 hours of clinical work) with a Play Therapy PTI supervisor.
- 80% attendance at the training.
The training will be conducted in Polish.
